Dr. Joseph Chao is a Research Assistant Professor in the Center for Ecogenomics, Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, directed by Deirdre Meldrum, dean of the university’s Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. He received his MS and PhD at the University of Washington in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, respectively. His research interest is focused on the miniaturized in situ instruments that analyze the microbial activities in oceanic environments. He is developing biological sensor networks composed of an array of intelligent, microscale devices to monitor biological, chemical and physical parameters in hydrothermal vent fields in 4-dimensional domains (time and space). This is his second cruise on R/V Thompson.
